The Smell of Us

The smell of us is a prospective research on body odors. It has been designed with the Paris Bettencourt iGEM team 2014 and was awarded best Art & Desgin and Best New Application at the 2014 iGEM world Jamboree

This project has been created with the participation of more than 1000 citizen that gave samples and helped to analyse scientific data.

Body odors remind us of the social perception of our bodies. The way we smell, and how we perceive the smell of others, reflects our gender, culture, and social status. In western culture today, perceptible body odor is often considered a mark of poor hygiene, poverty,
or foreignness. How might this perception change
if we could activate and control our natural smells through biotechnology?

The Smell of Us uses ultrapersonalized probiotic cosmetics to highlight your subtle natural fragrance.
We use cutting-edge analysis to discover the unique character of people’s microbiome, and reveal their
best smell.

We imagine a future when we relate to body odor
in new ways, made possible by the technology our team has developed. In this future, it is possible to isolate bacterial strains on the skin with desirable odor properties, then re-introduce them to the skin
in a commercial cosmetic. Our scenario presents different uses of this technology, and how it could change society, government and individual life styles.
